Selenium for Horses – The Foundation of Health, Immunity, and Muscle Performance

In modern horse breeding and equestrian sport, small details often determine both performance and overall well-being. One such essential yet frequently overlooked nutrient is selenium (Se). This trace mineral acts as a guardian of cellular health, and its deficiency can lead to numerous problems, ranging from reduced athletic performance and recurring infections to serious musculoskeletal disorders. Understanding the challenges associated with selenium-deficient soils, Selenium Plus with Vitamin E has been developed to effectively compensate for dietary deficiencies.

Why Is Selenium Supplementation Important?

Many regions of Europe have soils naturally low in selenium. As a result, traditional diets based on locally produced hay and oats often fail to meet a horse’s daily selenium requirements. Symptoms such as lethargy, stiffness, or a dull coat are frequently attributed to weather conditions or training fatigue, when the underlying cause may actually be an unbalanced diet. Therefore, selenium supplementation is not a luxury—it is a fundamental part of modern preventive horse care.

Antioxidant Protection: Selenium and Vitamin E

Selenium works closely with an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which neutralizes harmful peroxides produced during normal cellular metabolism. In this role, selenium has an invaluable partner: vitamin E. Although they function at different levels within the cell, their synergy is crucial. Vitamin E protects cell membranes from oxidation, while selenium neutralizes oxidative damage within the cell itself. Supplementing selenium without adequate vitamin E is significantly less effective. Research shows that the optimal balance of these two nutrients can significantly shorten recovery time after exercise and reduce the risk of muscle-related disorders.

Support for Muscles and Body Condition

Sport horses and horses in intensive training require special attention to muscle health. Selenium deficiency may manifest as stiffness, reluctance to move, and difficulty developing a strong topline, even when dietary protein intake is adequate. This supplement supports muscle fiber elasticity and helps horses fully benefit from their training programs. This is especially important for performance horses, where intense exercise generates large amounts of free radicals and oxidative stress.

Benefits for Hooves, Coat, and Reproduction

The role of selenium extends far beyond the musculoskeletal system. As an element involved in thyroid hormone production, it directly affects hoof horn quality and coat shine. Chronic deficiencies often result in brittle hooves and poor coat condition. Selenium is also essential in breeding. In mares, it may help reduce the risk of retained placenta and reproductive difficulties. In foals, adequate selenium levels help protect against white muscle disease, a condition that can cause irreversible damage to the heart and skeletal muscles.

Safety and Precision

The difference between an effective selenium dose and an excessive one is relatively small. For this reason, only highly bioavailable and safe forms of selenium are used in this formula. Carefully selected ingredients and a precisely balanced selenium content ensure excellent absorption, effectiveness, and safety.

When Should You Choose Selenium Plus?

• When your horse shows muscle stiffness or reluctance to work under saddle
• In cases of recurring infections or reduced immunity
• When building and maintaining muscle mass is difficult
• If the hoof horn is brittle and the coat has lost its natural shine
• As support for breeding mares and growing foals

Adequate selenium intake is an investment in the foundations of equine health: a strong heart, efficient muscles, and a resilient immune system. In many regions, relying solely on pasture and hay may not provide sufficient selenium. Professional supplementation helps compensate for these natural deficiencies, restoring your horse’s vitality, well-being, and athletic potential.
